We believe all autistic people can reach their full potential through neuro-affirming care.

ABC of NC is a nonprofit behavioral health clinic and licensed, accredited, DPI-approved school providing comprehensive, evidence-based services for autistic individuals and their families. Founded to expand access to high-quality, autism-specific care, ABC of NC offers therapeutic, diagnostic, and educational services grounded in applied behavior analysis (ABA), the most widely researched and recommended intervention for autism. As a one-of-a-kind model in our region, we bring clinical care, education, and family support together on one campus to meet the diverse needs of the individuals we serve.

Our Mission

Our Vision

The vision of ABC of NC is that all autistic people/people on the autism spectrum reach their full potential in a world where they are valued, accepted, and included.

Our Values

We respect and value the uniqueness of all individuals with autism spectrum disorder.

We individualize treatment, education plans and instructional techniques based on each client’s strengths and needs to create a one-of-a-kind program for every client.

We are committed to seeking funding from a variety of sources, including individuals donors, grants, educational partnerships, private health insurance, and Medicaid.

We recognize parents/guardians as the primary teachers and caregivers in the lives of our clients and seek to include them and the individual with autism as often as possible in decisions and implementation of therapeutic and educational programs.

We provide ongoing opportunities to teach parents/guardians about effective educational techniques, therapeutic interventions, current research, and advocacy efforts.

We understand that autism impacts the entire family, and we are committed to providing resources and services to support the parents and siblings of individuals diagnosed with autism.

We encourage parents/guardians of our clients to be involved in networking with other parents/guardians, teachers/staff, and other professionals.

We recognize autism treatment as a field open to new research findings and are committed to staying abreast of the latest information on evidence-based practices and applying these practices to our programs when appropriate.

We promote public awareness and understanding of autism spectrum disorders and advocate for public policy and funding that expands research as well as medical, therapeutic, educational, vocational, recreational, social, and residential options.

We encourage and promote cooperative relationships among schools, agencies, organizations, and other professionals involved in the lives of autistic people.

We value inclusivity: we encourage relationships between individuals with autism and their neuro-typical peers, and we plan lessons and activities to ensure that families and staff from diverse cultural backgrounds feel accepted and included.

We foster a culture of continuous improvement by incorporating stakeholder feedback into programmatic changes, long-term planning, and refinement of policies and procedures.

Our History

In 2002, ABC of NC was founded by parents/caregivers of an autistic child and began offering center-based, 1:1 instruction, small group instruction, autism parent/caregiver classes, and professional seminars. ABC of NC was the first in our community to offer these services and remains the only comprehensive autism services provider today.
In 2011, ABC of NC earned accreditation from Cognia®. Cognia is a non-profit, non-partisan organization that conducts rigorous, on-site external reviews of Pre-K-12 schools and school systems to ensure that all learners realize their full potential. Cognia accreditation assures parents/caregivers that ABC of NC is meeting nationally accepted standards for quality and professional practice.

In 2013, ABC of NC further expanded its mission to add mental health services for clients with co-occurring mental health conditions. The clinic, which accepts both private insurance and Medicaid, provides counseling services to autistic individuals and their families, including parents/caregivers and siblings.

In December 2015, ABC of NC moved to its current campus on Friedberg Church Road in Winston-Salem and initiated its Hello World capital campaign, which funded construction of the SECU Autism Clinic and the Burress Activity Center, allowing ABC of NC to broaden current services and develop new programs to better serve our community.

Throughout the years, ABC of NC leadership has advocated for public policy that improves service accessibility and community inclusion for autistic people.
